The Law of Slander and Libel, Founded Upon the Treatise of the Late Thomas Starkie, Esq., Q.C. by the late-19th-century barrister Henry Coleman Folkard, contains the following anecdote in re the fine levied by the Twelve Tables for slander:

The folly and absurdity of making either a fine or compensation fixed and arbitrary was well illustrated in the instance of Veratius, or Neratius, a rich Roman, who took great delight in walking through the streets of Rome, striking all those whom he met, according to his fancy and caprice: he was followed by a servant loaded with money, for the purpose of immediately paying the appointed fine to those whom he had thus insulted.

According to this blogpost, the anecdote originated with the Hadrian-era philosopher Favorinus and wound up in Aulus Gellius’s Attic Nights.

I'm just at the point in Kate Griffin's The Minority Council where ( spoiler ), and, y'know, I'm thinking that not even the Incredible Hulk wants to make ~~him~~ them mad.

I recommended the series to a friend last night and sent them some GoodReads links that weren't too spoilery (one, two, three). There were the inevitable comparisons to Neverwhere, even among the copious five-star reviews. Tsh'yeah, no. Admittedly I'm not a Gaiman fan, but to be blunt Neverwhere doesn't even come close.

I've finished Casket of Souls. There's one scene…

As for the book in general? I liked it much, much better than any other book in the series since the second, Stalking Darkness. That said, the first two — taken as one, because that's how Flewelling wrote them — would always be better than any sequels, no matter how well written. It's got the "save the world" plot of heroic fantasy, necessarily with evil that subsequent books can't touch, no matter how evil their villains get. It's got some superbly rendered character arcs. And it's got the UST between Alec and Seregil.

The seventh and final book, Shards of Time, comes out April 1. I hope it's as good as Casket of Souls. That said, Flewelling is wise to end the series there, hopefully tying up the last loose ends of various minor-character stories, before it jumps the shark completely.

not to mention the unsuitable (though beautiful) final verse, The White Road has been putting me in mind of Kate Wolf's "Across the Great Divide."
